Under the cool water
I lay you deep and calm.
I watch you sleep, dear angel
And I hope to
sleep this one time.
Arlette was smiling after a long time. Her son was sleeping finally, and she could take a long relaxing nap which was something she hadn’t been able to do since she had left her parents’ home. She woke up feeling fresh, and after finding Zeus still asleep, she went on to get the dinner ready for Cliff, before he came back from work. She hummed as she worked in the kitchen, hoping to whip up something delicious to please Cliff. It was a particularly gloomy day outside, but she felt euphoric as she danced and sang indoors. It was a small trailer house with tight spaces and moldy walls, but today she felt like finally being at home. Off late, Cliff had been looking glum to her; he was always irritated and often shouted at her. She hoped that a nice hot dinner in a quiet house might please his senses and he might act like his charming old self with her. She smiled at the prospects that such an evening could bring; maybe some cozy time with Cliff or he might just do the dishes for a change. And, she was fine with either.
After getting the dinner ready and set up, on their two-chaired dining table which she had covered with a gaudy looking, but clean table cloth, to hide the unsightly stains on the table top. She gave the table a final touch of elegance, by setting a candle in a glass; not a fancy fragrant one but just the regular candle that they used in case of the electricity cut, when they couldn’t pay off their bills in time. The table looked perfect to her tired and beautiful eyes, rimmed with dark circles but wide open with excitement. She then went in to find a clean dress for herself as she dreamt of a beautiful future with Zeus and Cliff. She twirled on a song that she sang in her mind as she checked on Zeus one last time, to confirm if he was still asleep.
