Dear Agent,
Arlette is a regular teenager, with lots of dreams and a romantic heart. She is on track in her life, with a loving family, excellent grades; all ready to join the choicest of institutes, after high school. But, life has different plans when she discovers that she is pregnant.
No matter what, she wants to keep the child, and chooses to leave her parents’ house. Her life is not easy in a run-down, small, trailer house, with her boyfriend Cliff. She doesn’t know that she is suffering from post-natal depression and psychosis, which is first induced by her pregnancy and stress. Her boyfriend cares the least to notice her symptoms and to take her for any kind of medical intervention. With the birth of her son ‘Zeus’ her momentary joy turns into severe depression, which reaches the extremes of what she could take. Her psychosis makes her take an extreme step of killing her eleven-month-old son during an episode of hallucination. She is put behind the bars for killing her son. She fights through the dark and twisted labyrinths of her mental illness and a harrowing time in jail, and is eventually released without any charges, by the court.
.
Back at her home, no one is ready to have a mother-who-killed-her-own-child, in their town. With lots of heart-aches and a suicide attempt later, Arlette leaves the town with her family. But, her guilt and sin never leave her. She makes a life for herself in a new city, where no one knows her dark past. As she struggles with her own inner monsters, people around her deal with their own baggage of guilts, blames, and sins.
After more than a decade of killing her son, she is living freely in the outside world, but she is not able to let her mind be free of her deeds. She meets Ethan, her handsome and charming lawyer, who had once saved her from rotting in jail, years ago. Ethan, a middle-aged man with his own history of a traumatic childhood under the hands of an addict mother, falls for Arlette. With the ups and downs of life and Arlette’s mind, they sail in life, happy and content, yet fearful of their future.
But, Arlette is pregnant again. And this time, she will make sure that she doesn’t kill her child. She doesn’t know if she will be able to save her child from herself, or the history will repeat itself.
This is a story of a family’s journey of courage, guilt, mental illness, friendship, acceptance, fear, insecurity and heartbreak.
While going through my own pregnancy and postnatal stress, I felt strongly for the women who must be going through the worst. Hence, my mind created Arlette, who is a mother with nothing going in her favour, including her mental health. She is someone who has done the most hateful sin in the world, of killing her own child, and yet she is not guilty.
The Twisted Mind of Arlette Brown is an Adult commercial fiction (Audience: 18 to 40 years old), complete at 108,769.
Do let me know if you would like to read the complete manuscript, and see if Arlette deserves to be hated or cared for.
