Title: ESSENCE
Genre: Urban/Contemporary Fantasy
Word Count: 77,000
Hazel Blackmore knows everything there is to know about magic: from what essences are needed to enchant her way to the perfect cup of coffee, to how to solve complex potioning equations. She could be the most competent practitioner in history. That is, she could if she had an ounce of the ability needed to pull magic through the Veil keeping magic and the mundane separated. Without that, the best she can do is to work her ass off at her aunt Enid’s Essence Distillery to prove herself.
When Enid disappears, several of the essence brews start to unravel. As an added spike to her already mile-high anxiety, the anti-magic group picketing the shop starts growing violent. Hazel has to rely on her own wits to keep the essences from contaminating the other distillations. She enlists the help of Leo, a charming courier with a dark past, to help her find Enid.
Only, Leo has an agenda that is at cross purposes with her own, and he might not be on her side after all, and it turns out Enid is on the run from the most dangerous gang of practitioners in the west. If she can’t find Enid and fix the corrupted essences, the Veil could tear and flood Denver with enough raw magic to turn the city into a wasteland, killing everyone it touches.
ESSENCE is a 75,000 word Contemporary Fantasy that should appeal to fans of Seannan McGuire’s October Daye series. My short fiction has been published in Sibyl’s Scriptorium and the Salt Lake Community College Folio magazine.

Bio/About me:
I'm a big fan of anything speculative. I read fantasy, urban fantasy, space opera sci fi, and things that blur the lines between all those extensively. I also enjoy historical fantasy and alternate history. I'm a wife, mom, have three cats and a dog, and am going back to school to get my AS in English.
Thanks for taking a look
I work with CPs now, but I am seeking new eyes on my current project. A Beta reader would be amazing, but if anyone sees this and wants to work with me as a crit partner, please let me know! As a crit partner I try to tailor what feedback I give to what the author is looking for. IE: How is my pacing in this chapter? Overall thoughts? Characterization issues? If my CP doesn't give me any guidelines to go off of, I give reader feedback. I don't want to rewrite anyone's work, nor do I want anyone who will try to rewrite my sentences. If anyone wants to do a first chapter exchange, let me know and we can see if it works out!
