Dear [Editor’s name],
Neolithic Southeast Asia: Fisherman Fayjar finds himself stranded by the attack of a sea serpent on a primeval island. Together with his two bosses, warriors from the ruling class, he must reach the human settlement on the island's opposite side—though the journey means eluding poisonous land-dragons, giant birds of prey, and man-eating goblins. Fayjar is willing to fight them all, for winter is closing in, and if he doesn't make it back home with the priest-king's prize by solstice, his 8-year-old sister will be this year's sacrifice to the Taro God.
When they meet the dwarf tribe of the Ebu Gogo, the three men are offered aid in exchange for help. The Ebu Gogo's volcano god resides near the human settlement Fayjar must reach, and the dwarfs believe a golden circlet must be returned to the god in order to quell his rising wrath. Though Fayjar and his companions know the circlet to be the work of mortal men, they agree to guard the Ebu Gogo champion on his quest to return it.
In the human settlement, a woman named Aditya struggles under the abuse of her husband, a usurper suspected of killing her brother, the former chieftain. Aditya cannot accept a life of servitude for her daughter and resists her husband's patriarchal laws. Her efforts prove futile, and her escape attempts fall flat and cause more pain—for herself, her daughter, and her people. When her husband's goblin henchman return from the wilderness with foreign captives, she recognizes a way to put an end to her husband and finally break free.
But the volcano threatens eruption and time grows short. Escape becomes a battle, and then a perilous journey. Fayjar learns his companions have betrayed him, and nothing will save his sister but a volunteer to take her place. A greater threat awaits Aditya in the land she once called home, and she must overcome her ailing father's oppressors as she did her abusive spouse. Together, they can save the lives of two young girls—Fayjar's sister and Aditya's daugher. But only if they learn to get along.
EBU GOGO ISLAND is a Young Adult Dark Fantasy of 62,000 words that may have actually happened, since these mythic creatures and cultures actually existed on Flores, Indonesia in the depths of our prehistoric past. It should appeal of fans of CHILDREN OF BLOOD AND BONE and CLAN OF THE CAVE BEAR.
I've received two awards from Writers of the Future, written hundreds of magazine and newspaper articles, and my first novelette releases in September 2018 from Radiant Crown Publishing.
As stated in your guidelines, I’ve included [agent's guidelines]. Thank you for considering EBU GOGO ISLAND.
Sincerely,
Joe
